Vella Kozhukattai / Pidi Kozhukattai

Vella / Pidi Kozhukattai - Vinayagar Chathurthi

Vella kozhukattai is a very humble and light dish made with rice flour and jaggery. It is steam cooked dish. This kozhukattai is Vinayagar Chathurthi🌺🌻 special. This recipe is easy with minimum ingredients and healthy too.

We can either prepare the rice flour at home or buy from shop. Today I used the store bought rice flour. Make sure you buy fresh rice fours just before making and never use old flours which had been there in your pantry for long. Such rice flours smells stale and rancid. Here is how I make the vella kozhukattai.

Ingredients:

  • Rice flour - 1 cup (plus few teaspoons extra in case of necessity)
  • Jaggery - 1/2 cup
  • Water - 1/4 cup
  • Cardamom powder - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Coconut pieces - 1 tablespoon
  • Ghee - 1 small teaspoon

Procedure:

  • Add the quarter cup water to the jaggery and keep it on the stove.
  • After some time the jaggery will be dissolved.

  • Now filter the jaggery water into another container.
  • Let it come to rolling boil. But do not let it boil longer. We do not want syrup. We just want hot jaggery water.
  • Add the cardamom powder and coconut pieces to this jaggery water.

  • Following this add the rice flour too to the boiling jagegry water.
  • Keep mixing. Mix till it forms a dough. It will be hot.

  • You can add few more teaspoons of rice flour if required.
  • Remove from stove and keep in on a hot mat, add little ghee and knead it little with the ladle.
  • Let it cool a bit.
  • In the mean time keep the idli pot or the pressure cooker ready with water to steam cook the kozhukattais
  • Now, take a small portion of the sweet rice dough and make small balls and press it tight to make the fist print on it. Roll the rest of the dough to such kozhukattais.
  • Keep it in idli cooker and steam cook for 20 mins.
  • After 20 mins turn off the stove. Wait for 5 minutes. Then, open.
  • The lovely vella kozhukattais are ready to be offered to the vinai theerkum Lord Vinaayagar.

Enjoy this delight with your family and friends. Happy Vinayagar Chathurthi.

Happy cooking !!
