Pongal Festival

Pongal Festival or Sankaranthi

Pongal is a close-to-our heart-festival for any South Indian. Since I was born and bought-up in Chennai.. I have not seen any traditional Pongal celebrations. All I know about Pongal is food.. food .. food.

Pongal is another day when they spread a vegetarian menu and serve it in banana leaf. So I wait for it the whole year. Sugar cane - bonus!

And talking about sugar cane.. Myself and my father used to eat sugarcane seriously like a big job thinking.. we-eat-sugarcane-like-this-because-we-don't-get-sugarcane-the-rest-of-the-year.😆😂

Sarkarai pongal, vadai, payasam, sambar, 3 side dishes, appalam (papad), rasam and moru was on the menu - heaven on banana leaf. The 3 sides include green plantain roast, broad beans poriyal, colocasia roast. So many items in one day.. definitely could not finish them. At the end of the day, after dinner, we used to transfer all the left over items, such as sambar, side dishes and rasam, into one dish and boil it once before going to bed. Here comes the "sunda kuzhambu".. the "heaven" part 2. This is an awesome dish which goes well with any breakfast for the next day or even with plain rice.

Here are some of the dishes we do on Pongal festival and I want to share with you.. even though there are not all the items.. I am trying to bring them all here..
