Gala-gala (Kalakala) - Gala Time Snack !

Gala-gala (Kalakala)

Galagala is another snack with my childhood memories. I very well remember.. that day.. Jurassic Park movie was released. My uncle took us kids to the movie in a nearby theatre at a walk-able distance (Muralikrishna Theatre, Shenoy Nagar, Chennai. The theatre is now demolished and been built into a wedding hall). We enjoyed the movie. When we returned home, my auntie made this gala-gala and kept ready for us to munch.
When I asked my auntie why the name gala-gala, she said it is named so because of the sound it makes when you put it in a box or the sound which comes when you put your hand inside the box to pull out some of it.

Gala-gala is a easy snack, not much preparation time. I made it with wheat flour.. so not much guilty. But deep fried - still you won't be able to find any trace of oil.

This galagala or kalakala is a good choice for Krishna Jayanthi or Deepavali as Festival goodie.

You can let your kids involve themselves in making this snack. This is a fool-proof recipe, so it can't go wrong. My daughter helped me cut the gala-galas (fun part) and transfer them to a plate (boring part ЁЯШБ). Do not forget to tell them "thank you so much sweetheart.. you were such a big help!".

Now lets go to the gala-gala snack.

Ingredients:

  • Wheat flour - 2 cups
  • Water - 1 cup (or less)
  • Sugar - 3/4 cup
  • Oil - for deep frying
  • Salt - 1 pinch

Procedure:

  • Dissolve the sugar in the 1 cup of water. If it is hard to dissolve the sugar in the given amount of water, then slightly heat the water to ease the dissolving. Then let it come to room temperature.
  • Now take the flour in a big bowl, add this sugar water and knead to a tight dough.
  • Let it sit for 10 minutes.
  • Divide the dough into 4 equal portions.
  • Flatten one ball with the rolling pin. Flatten it like chapathi. Use dry flour to avoid sticking.
  • Now using the pizza cutter or somaas cutter to cut the flattened dough into small diamonds.
  • Transfer them to a dry flour-dusted plate and keep ready.
  • In the mean while heat some oil to deep fry these gala-galas.
  • Once the oil is hot, deep fry these gala-galas in few batches till golden brown.
  • Wait for the gala-galas to come to room temperature. (otherwise it will be soft and not crunchy).
  • Store in an air tight box when cool.

Here is one of the best time pass snack for you and your kids.

You can add little ghee or butter to get less-hard gala-gala. Other wise, week-tooth - stay away from this snack.ЁЯШБ

Happy cooking !!
