Mullangi Keerai Poriyal / Radish and its Greens Stirfry

Mullangi Keerai Poriyal

Mullangi keerai or radish leaves/greens has a very unique astringent taste. In Tamil the taste is called as "துவர்ப்பு".

I tried to find an English word equivalent to this Tamil word "துவர்ப்பு", but then i came to know that the English has 5 tastes only excluding துவர்ப்பு. On further search i was able to the find the word "astringent taste" whose meaning was close to  துவர்ப்பு.
The radish greens are very crunchy even after cooking which makes it interesting to consume. I make it with peanut powder.

I use the small radish along with its greens to make this poriyal.

Radish greens aid in skin care, lowers cholesterol, aid in digestion, boosts immunity, improves liver health and regulate blood sugar. So, next time buy the radish along with the greens/leaves and cook them to get all these benefits and moreover it is fun eating the radish keerai poriyalas it is it crunchy. 😁
make sure you wash the radish greens well before using.
here is how i make the mullangi keerai poriyal.

Ingredients:

  • Mullangi keerai (radish greens/leaves) - 1 bunch
  • Peanuts - 3/4 cup (roasted)
  • chilli powder -1/2 teaspoon
  • coriander powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • turmeric powder
  • garlic - 4 cloves
  • salt - as required
  • oil - 1 tablespoon

Procedure:

  • roast the peanuts and make a coarse powder of it.
  • wash and chop the greens along with the radish and keep ready.
  • heat little oil in a pan, add the chopped greens, and add the crushed garlic on it.
  • add salt, turmeric powder, chilli powder and coriander powder.
  • sprinkle some water and cover the pan.
  • let it cook in low heat.
  • open after 10 minutes and let the water dry out in it.
  • when all the water in the poriyal has evaporated, add the roasted peanut powder and give a final stir.
  • remove from fire and the flavourful crisp radish greens stir fry is ready.
Mullangi keerai poriyal/radish greens stir fry is a tasty and healthy greens stir fry with a different flavour. This poriyal has a subtle bitterness in it which gives the twist. Its goes well sambar/curd/rasam rice.
