Uppu Urundai (or) Kara Kozhukattai - 100th Post

Uppu Urundai - Light Breakfast or Dinner

Uppu urundai is an traditional South Indian food item made with idli-rice.
It is an healthy and light dish for breakfast or dinner. It needs prior soaking of rice. some people make it with rice-rava. But we soak the idli-rice and grind it into batter, saute it, make balls and steam cook them. Myself and my husband are always ready for this uppu urindais. We always have space in our stomach for this. 😋. We do not need chutney too. We can eat it just like that. My daughter too started liking it. You have to acquire a taste for this uppu urundai. Once you start liking it.. you can be happy that you like one of the good, healthy food on earth.
It is very easy recipe. Here is how to make it.

  • curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • dry red chillies - 3-4
  • mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • urad dhal - 1/2 teaspoon
  • bengal gram dhal - 2 teaspoons
  • asafoetida - 2 pinches
  • oil - 3 teaspoons

Procedure:

  • Wash and soak the idli rice for at least 4 to 5 hours.
  • Grind the rice with water to dosa batter consistency.
  • Add salt, curry leaves and coconut pieces.
  • Mix well. keep aside
  • In a kadai, heat some oil.
  • Add the mustard, bengal gran dhal, urad dhal, red chillies and asafoetida.

  • Reduce the heat to low.
  • Now add the rice batter to the kadai with tempering.
  • Stir immediately. mix it well in low heat.
  • Keep stirring till the batter becomes thick to one big ball.
  • Touch it with wet hand and it should not stick to your hand. this means  the batter is cooked.
  • Turn off the stove. let it cool for 5 minutes.

  • Make small balls of the dough.  wet hands would help.
  • Steam cook these balls like idlies for 10-15 minutes.
  • Serve hot.

Here you go.. here is the simple and polite uppu urundais for light breakfast or for a dinner.
It goes well without a chutney or if you are adamant of having a chutney then go for a red chutney. Its awesome with uppu uruundai.

Happy eating all !!
