Laddu.. used to be a main sweet in the weddings, festivals, special occasions etc. But now a days.. kids prefer some fancy sweets to these traditional boondi laddu. Being born and raised in this land, I think it I to sow some seeds of love for these traditional sweets in our kids hearts. I am making boondi laddu this Deepawali.

Today I am making laddu with one cup of gram flour for my blog post. The variety of flavours I gave this laddu.. my daughter liked them. Few tricks here and there... gives these laddus a store-bought-laddu taste.

There were days when I thought that I couldn't make these laddus at home. Later I realised that our traditional sweets were lot easier to reproduce the recipe at home. There are few tips to hold in mind while making the laddu.. little puppy love for laddu... that's all.. you can make great boondi laddus. Let us make these awesome traditional sweeties this year for Deepavali and bring back our lovely laddus to our list of festival favourites. Cheers to laddus !!

Ingredients:

  • gram flour - 1 cup
  • cooking soda - 1/ 4 teaspoon
  • sugar - 1 cup
  • water for syrup - 1/2 cup
  • cardamom - 2
  • cloves - 3 nos.
  • ghee few teaspoons
  • cashews and  raisins - to garnish
  • melon seeds - for garnish
  • edible camphor - as tiny as a rice grain
  • oil to deep fry boondi

Procedure:

  • add water little by little to the gram flour with cooking soda and bring it to dosa batter consistency.
  • add half cup water to the sugar and let it come to one string consistency.
  • heat oil in a broad pan.
  • using the boondi-making-ladle, fry boondi.
  • make sure that the boondies are only 75% cooked. If they are fully cooked they become crispy and doesn't help while rolling them to laddus.
  • while the boondies are 75% cooked remove them from oil and add to the syrup.
  • stir well. let it soak.
  • roast the cashews, raisins and cloves in ghee and add to the soaking boondi. add a few spoons of ghee, some melon seeds and little cardamom powder to this mixture.
  • crush (with index finger and thumb) and add the edible camphor too to this.
  • mix well.
  • let it soak for 30 minutes.
  • try to mash the boondi a little with a laddle itself or take few teaspoons of sweet boondhi to a mixer and pulse it and mix with the rest of the soaking boondhi.
  • mix well and roll them to laddus.
  • awesome.. nostalgic and luscious laddus are ready to make your festival more special.
Here i added little turmeric powder for little colour.

Tips:
The cloves and edible camphor are completely optional. But they definitely give an excellent flavour to the laddus.
And regarding nuts for garnish.. you can add chopped almonds too to give more crunch to the laddus.

Now i will say that laddus are easier to make and good to eat. It gives a satisfaction that i am still saving those traditional sweets. I am sure that my daughter's love for this delicacy will make her also to save and pass on this recipe of our traditional sweet - The Laddu, to her next generation.

Happy cooking !!
