Maangaai Pachadi / Green Mango Pachadi - Use the Season - Summer's Sweet-Sour-Spicy

Green Mango Pachadi - Sweet-Sour-Spicy


This green mango sweet-sour-spicy pachadi is the seasonal dish. Summer comes.. mango comes.. this mangaai pachadi also comes!! Maangaai pachadi has sweetness from jaggery, sourness for mango, and spiciness is contributed by chilli powder.

More than as side dish, I prefer to take this pachadi in a small cup with a spoon and enjoy licking it off just like that 😂. As usual, my mother used to yell at me, not only because we are finishing it before the lunch time but also because it is summer and eating many mangoes that too spicy, plus jaggery -- all ingredients increase body heat. We kids will later end up with heat boils for the summer. 😕

I never miss to make this dish during the summer. Along with the mango rice, mango pickle, mango sambar.. this maangaai pachadi is also a summer-must dish.

Ingredients:

  • Green mangoes (Bengalora or the kilimooku maangai) - 2
  • Jaggery - 1/2 cup
  • Turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Chilli powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Corinder powder1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt for taste
  • Dry red chillies - 3
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida - 1 pinch
  • Oil - 12 teaspoons

Procedure:

  • Cut the mango to 1 inch pieces and keep ready.
  • Heat some oil in a kadai and add the mustard, dry chilli and asafoetida. 
  • Add the mango pieces, chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and salt. Stir well.
  • Add 1 cup of water and give another stir.
  • Cover it and cook in medium heat for 10 - 15 minutes.
  • Open the kadai to see the mangoes all well cooked.
  • Add the jaggery to this and let it dissolve. Let it boil for another 5 minutes.
  • By now the contents would have become thicker. 
  • Turn off the heat and the green mango pachadi is ready to be served.

The consistency of this pachadi is upto your requirement. I have seen people making it as watery as sweet-sour-spicy-mango kuzhambu and mix it with plain white rice.
This maangaai pachadi / green mango pachadi is good with sambar / rasam / kara kuzhambu / curd rice.
This dish is a medley of tastes where your taste buds go crazy every time you taste it.
