Mukkani-Then Kalavai - THE Three Fruits in Honey Medley!

முக்கனி -தேன்  கலவை  - சங்ககால  உணவு

முக்கனி  - மா, பலா மற்றும் வாழை.
i have heard about the term "mukkani" means "The three fruits" - mango, jackfruit and banana... during our Tamil classes in our schools and colleges.
Ancient days Tamilians used to relish this mukkani with honey. These three fruits are the sweetest native fruits of South India. And how would that be with the sweeter honey!! After tasting that combination.. today i feel, that writing a food blog and haven't tasted this mukkani-then kalavai so long.. it all makes no sense.
Awesome flavourful sweet juicy summer fruits brought together with sweeter honey.. is a medley !!

The fruits our ancient Tamilians used to consume would have definitely been better than what we get these days. This dish throws some light on the quality of food they would have eaten those days and quality of life they would have lead. All pure and fresh from happy Mother Nature. That was because they were happy with whatever nature gave them. They were not greedy, also knew to their core that they are just a part of this planet and therefore they co-existed with other members of the nature.

This time mango was from our tree, jack fruit for our neighbours' tree and banana alone from shop and honey from Kodaikanal.
i have decided that hereafter, every summer i will make this mukkani then kalavai.

Ingredients:

  • nice, sweet ripe mango
  • nice, sweet, aromatic jack fruit
  • sweet and soft banana (short country type)
  • honey

Procedure:

  • cut all the three fruits to small pieces and transfer this to a bowl.
  • drench the fruits generously with honey.
  • mix gently.
  • that's it ! முக்கணி  தேன் கலவை - mukkani then kalavai - THE three fruit medley is ready to be relished.

Happy cooking !!
